I am doing a book
report on Chief Pontiac. Half Chippewa and half Ottawa, Pontiac was born
in an Ottawa village by Detroit around 1720. Pontiac’s dad was Chief of
the Ottawa tribe, and Pontiac’s mom was in the Chippewa tribe.
Pontiac learned to hunt, swim, paddle a canoe, and play lacrosse. While other young Indians were shooting their arrows at trees for practice, the young Ottawa was developing the war skills that later brought him the leadership of his own tribe and many others. Chief Pontiac was an important leader of the Ottawa. He believed that Native Americans should fight against the British colonists. His glorious victories and his courageous fight to keep the homeland of his people are his main contributions. Pontiac led Indians to attack other British forts. One of the most important attacks was a clever plan to capture Fort Michilimackinac. By July 1763, Native Americans had managed to capture all but three British forts in the area west of the Ohio River. The British stopped giving goods to the Indians. The British were taking the Indian’s land. Pontiac took several adventures to capture British forts. Pontiac and his men had to fight the British who had better weapons and supplies. His plan to capture Fort Pontchartain failed though, because someone told the British about Pontiac’s plan. The Native Americans fought bravely to defend the land and the freedom that the British were taking away from them. Eventually, Pontiac became convinced that Indians could not win a war against the British. He then spent the rest of his life working for peace with the British. Some of Pontiac’s hobbies were swimming, hunting, and playing lacrosse. Pontiac’s job was to be the leader of different tribes. I heard of Pontiac being a great hero over the Great Lakes, but I knew very little about him .Written by Eddy for Mrs. Runyon, Murphy Elementary, Haslett.
